The Internet is not a safe place, period. We use it every day assuming it is safe, but it is not. Everyone should be using encryption to protect privacy.

For email, you should use PGP. If you use a Mac, you can use Mac Mail with GPG Tools. The implementation is so slick and it just works. On Windows you could use GPG4Win.

You can also use services like Hushmail or ProtonMail, but you have to trust them to hold your keys. I prefer to hold the keys myself and use PGP on my Mac.

Alternatively, you could stop using email for secure communications. Opt for a secure messaging apps like Threema or CyberDust.

Never use SMS (text messaging) on your phone unless you have to. SMS is not secure. iMessage on an iPhone is (fairly) secure as is Threema.
